New Orleans might have felt a little safer on the weekend of Jan 6th-8th as superheroes and television heroes alike converged on the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.  Cosplayers, gamers and fans of all things geek made their annual trek to the Wizard World Comic Con to meet their favorite TV and movie stars such as David Duchovny of the X-Files, Christopher Lloyd and Tom Wilson from the Back to the Future trilogy, and Michael Rooker, Michael Cudlitz, and Tom Payne from The Walking Dead just to name a few.  A handful of these celebrities including Robert Englund (Freddy of the famed Nightmare on Elm Street saga), Jewel Staite (Kaylee Frye of Firefly) and James Marsters (Spike of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) participated in panel discussions that gave audience members a special insight into their favorite show or movie featuring the actor.

Beyond the celebrity appeal, the convention itself is a sensory overload of pop culture filled with talented artists, alluring vendors brimming with delightful oddities and rarities as well as a wide array of activities. The various activities included Nerd Speed Dating, LAN parties, a costume contest and a special screening of the original Rocky Horror Picture Show hosted by Barry Bostwick who played the character Brad Majors in the film.

On a sadder note, the convention was without one of its more prestigious icons as the main headlining guest, Carrie Fisher, had passed away in late December. However, Star Wars enthusiasts are arguably one of the most dedicated and passionate fandoms so it was no surprise to witness the sizable memorial processional dedicated to the late Star Wars legend. “The Force” was definitely with us all that weekend.

She moved from Starkville to Hattiesburg in 2006 and while working at a large electronics retailer, soon began pursuing her dream of photographing some of the biggest names in music history including, Paramore, KISS, Slash and Foo Fighters. When she is not in the photo pit shooting rock stars, she’s skating on the flat track as a veteran jammer for the Hub City Derby Dames or helping take care of her three mini me’s with her husband, Scott.</p>
